Comprehensive Guide to Engine Overheating and Cooling System Issues

🔥 I. Engine Overheating / Boiling Over

👉 Basic principle: Check external causes first, then internal; simple issues before complex ones.

1️⃣ Radiator Blockage (Common Cause)

Inspection:

  • External blockage: insects, cotton fluff, dirt

  • Internal scaling or rust buildup

  • ✔ Uneven temperature across radiator surface (cold spots by touch)

Correction:

  • External: Clean with low-pressure air or water (⚠️ avoid damaging fins)

  • Internal: Flush with cooling system cleaner → replace if severely clogged

2️⃣ Low Coolant Level / Leakage

Inspection:

  • Low level in expansion tank

  • Visible coolant traces or dripping

  • ✔ Check coolant level when engine is cold

Correction:

  • ✔ Refill with the same type of coolant (do NOT mix types)

  • ✔ Locate leaks: radiator, hoses, water pump, radiator cap

  • ✔ Perform pressure test if necessary

3️⃣ Cooling Fan Not Operating

Inspection:

  • Does the fan run at idle?

  • Does it engage when A/C is turned on?

  • Check fuse, relay, temperature switch

Correction:

  • Replace fuse or relay

  • Repair wiring

  • Replace fan motor or temperature switch

👉 Practical tip:
✔ Overheating in traffic but normal at highway speed → usually a fan issue

4️⃣ Thermostat Stuck Closed

Symptoms:

  • ✔ Upper radiator hose hot, lower hose cool

  • ✔ Rapid temperature rise

  • ✔ Cabin heater works well (hot air)

Correction:

  • Replace thermostat

  • ❌ Do NOT remove thermostat permanently (causes high fuel consumption and engine wear)

5️⃣ Water Pump Failure (Often Overlooked)

Inspection:

  • ✔ Overheating but radiator not hot (poor circulation)

  • ✔ Noise or leakage from water pump

  • ✔ No visible coolant flow in radiator (engine warm)

Correction:

  • Replace water pump

❄️ II. Low Engine Temperature / Slow Warm-Up

Cause:

  • Thermostat stuck open

Symptoms:

  • ✔ Engine takes long to reach operating temperature

  • ✔ Poor heater performance

  • ✔ Increased fuel consumption

Correction:

  • Replace thermostat

💧 III. Coolant Leakage

1️⃣ Radiator Leakage

Inspection:

  • Cracks, seepage, white residue

Correction:

  • Minor leak: temporary sealant

  • ✔ Recommended: replace radiator

2️⃣ Hoses / Clamps

Inspection:

  • Aging, swelling, cracking

  • Leakage at connections

Correction:

  • Replace hoses

  • Tighten or replace clamps

3️⃣ Radiator Cap Failure (⚠️ Commonly Ignored)

Function:
👉 Maintains system pressure → raises boiling point

Inspection:

  • Worn sealing ring

  • Premature boiling

Correction:

  • Replace with correct specification cap

🌡️ IV. Air Lock in Cooling System

Symptoms:

  • ✔ Fluctuating temperature

  • ✔ Heater alternates between hot and cold

  • ✔ Temperature changes with acceleration

Correction:

  • ✔ Properly bleed the cooling system (critical step)

⚠️ If air keeps entering:

👉 Suspect: Blown head gasket

Additional signs:

  • Milky engine oil

  • White exhaust smoke

  • Continuous coolant loss

🧱 V. External Radiator Damage

Problem:

  • Bent or damaged fins

Effect:

  • Reduced airflow → poor heat dissipation

Correction:

  • Minor: straighten fins carefully

  • Severe: replace radiator

🛠️ VI. Routine Maintenance Tips

  • ✔ Replace coolant every 2 years or 40,000 km

  • ❌ Do NOT mix different coolant types

  • ✔ Regularly inspect:

    • Coolant level

    • Hose condition

    • Fan operation

👉 Always check before hot weather or long trips

🧠 Quick Diagnostic Tips (Technician’s Rule of Thumb)

Overheats in traffic → Fan problem
Large temp difference (hoses) → Thermostat
Overheating without coolant loss → Water pump
Fluctuating temperature → Air lock
Repeated air lock → Head gasket
